Squirrel in Chimney

Squirrels occasionally get trapped in chimneys when the chimney has not been capped.  Thread a thick rope down the chimney to give the squirrel something to grip onto to climb out.  Or if there is a door near the fireplace, open the door, close off all areas to other parts of the house, and open the damper and fireplace.  Leave the room – the squirrel will smell the outdoors and run out.

Squirrel in Fireplace

If there is a door near the fireplace, open the door, close off all areas to other parts of the house, and open the damper and fireplace.  Leave the room – the squirrel will smell the outdoors and run out.  If no door near the fireplace exists, prepare a shoebox with a 3” hole cut in the end, fill the box with leaves and tape the lid shut.  Place the box into the fireplace.  The squirrel should run into the box in a short period of time.  You can then block off the hole and bring the box outside and release squirrel.
